Role Context
  • This is new role that has been created within the newly formed Commercial, Engineering, and Strategic Development (CESD) department, which reports to the Managing Director APAC.
  • Within CESD, four commercial regions have been established; EMEA, APAC, Americas and India; within each commercial region LanzaTech requires both Commercial and Technical capabilities to drive sales opportunities to revenue.
  • Therefore, each commercial region will be setup with a number of ‘commercial teams’, with commercial lead(s) (Commercial Sales Manager) and one technical lead(s) (Technical Sales Manager) working as a team to cover a specific geographical area within the commercial region and/or a set of agreed customer accounts.
  • The core purpose of the APAC commercial team is to identify and develop opportunities for the sale of LanzaTech Gas Fermentation technology licenses to a wide range of customers in APAC.

About the role
  • CarbonSmartTM products are low carbon footprint materials that are produced via LanzaTech’s proprietary gas fermentation process which utilizes recycled carbon emissions as the feedstock for new and more sustainable materials.
  • As a member of the Commercial team, the Commercial Sales Manager of CarbonSmartTM will report to the Managing Director, APAC. She/He will have a key role in growing the business in APAC regions, through identifying and developing new opportunities, and developing and maintaining strong relationships with key customers across a broad range of industries including fragrances, personal care, home care, textiles, & packaging. This role will contribute to accelerating the commercialization of LanzaTech products in the APAC market.
  • The Commercial Sales Manager of CarbonSmartTM will be able to clearly communicate CarbonSmartTM products’ unique value proposition to support customers in achieving their sustainability ambitions. This role will work with value chain partners to deliver a diverse portfolio of CarbonSmartTM products to customers across diverse industries. This role is accountable for delivering on forecasted sales revenue and gross margin targets. In this role, the Commercial Sales Manager of CarbonSmartTM will execute on commercial project opportunities, working closely with the local and US/EU based Sales Support personnel, Logistics, Quality, and Legal groups.
  • The successful candidate must have strong business development/sales skills and strategic insight paired with technical understanding, ideally with experience in chemical, biofuel, or consumer goods sectors.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to be a high-energy, creative, highly analytical and resourceful self-starter with demonstrated strategic marketing skills, strong communications skills, and a commitment to excellence.

Key Duties
  • Manage day-to-day relationships with customers and develop a deep understanding of their requirements and long-term business strategies.
  • Generate new business opportunities to achieve sales and profit targets.
  • Negotiate contracts with customers to deliver on sales and profit targets.
  • Maintain good contacts with prospective clients and develop/grow strong relationships in industry.
  • Develop and implement sales plan to deliver on commercial targets and grow the business, including development of pricing strategies across market segments.
  • Forecast and report on key metrics to commercial management team.
  • Conduct fact-based analysis of market trends; competitive data; technology advancements; and customer needs assessment to optimize current business and drive new business development.
  • Understand customer sustainability needs and propose solutions to enable customers to achieve sustainability targets.
  • Work with value chain partners to deliver innovative sustainable solutions for strategic customers.
  • Update and report on customer engagements utilizing customer relationship management systems (i.e. Salesforce).

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, science, marketing; preferred degree in chemical engineering.
  • MBA or graduate degree is a plus.
  • 5+ years of prior experience in Sales, Key Account Management, and/or Business Development.
  • Prior technical experience in new product development and launch.
  • Global experience.
  • Experience in the personal care, home care, pharmaceutical and/or biofuels industries with roles in sales, strategic marketing and/or development.
  • Must have strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Proven project management and leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to work with senior leaders and across functions.

Work Environment
  • Able to work in the Shanghai office primarily, as well as working remotely at home, when not travelling.
  • Up to 50% of travel is required, majority within APAC.
