Process Safety Engineer

About the role:

Many of the employees at the Freedom Pines Facility are responsible for more than one duty.  This position is an example of this required flexibility and the chosen candidate will be responsible for the following key functions at the site:

  1. Actively engage in plant engineering projects to support the site and the team.  These projects can be broad in their scope and can be site wide infrastructure improvements or process specific project support needs. The engineering portion will require a broad range of skills including a working knowledge of electrical, chemical and mechanical engineering principles. 
  2. Directly manage Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS), providing technical and administrative direction on decisions which bear critical importance to company objectives.  Serve as onsite EHS subject matter expert to direct activities, champion regulatory compliance, oversee third party safety amongst contractors/visitors to the LanzaTech Soperton, GA facility.

Key Duties:

  • Support and/or lead projects as needed.  Some of these projects will have a safety side to them; however, the position will not be limited to safety projects only.  This site is an R&D facility so there is a constant need to modify processes, many times quickly, to acquire the required data to push the technology platform.
  • Provide EHS leadership to Soperton, GA site operations including:
  • Monitoring EHS systems, policies, procedures, and work practices to maintain compliance with corporate and governmental requirements.
  • Authoring and/or review site specific EHS policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Acting as the liaison with relevant authorities and agencies, including local emergency responders.
  • Assist in investigation of incidents and ensure proper documentation is maintained. Manage implementation of EHS related corrective actions and ensure lessons learned are communicated throughout the Company
  • Contribute to safety reviews such as Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Job Safety Analysis (JSA).  Act as the site Management of Change (MOC) Coordinator.  Devise and coordinate site specific training programs and materials, in accordance with corporate guidelines.
  • Manage reporting and record keeping requirements of Federal, State and Local Environmental and Safety agencies and/or permits to ensure site and its projects are in compliance.

Qualifications and Experience:


  • A bachelor’s degree (4 year) or higher in Engineering or related technical field.
  • Five+ years’ experience managing project safety with industrial sites, labs, or chemicals/oil/gas industries
  • Certifications and/or extensive understanding of OSHA regulations strongly desirable:
  • Knowledge and hands on experience in Life Critical activities like Confined Space Entry, Lockout Tag Out, Hot Work and Fall Protection.
  • Experience with Powered Industrial Truck, Aerial Lift and Crane operation.
  • OSHA 500/501, HAZWOPER certification
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills. The position will be required to speak effectively before groups such as clients, contractors and employees at all levels of the company.
  • Computer Skills – Excellent computer skills required with Microsoft Office programs experience.  AutoCAD experience is a plus.
  • The successful candidate will be passionate, responsible, independent and able to solve problems day to day with minimal oversight. 
  • Ability to lead a project, gather and analyze data, set priorities, organize tasks and meet deadlines, while coordinating multiple job functions.
  • Advanced and general engineering calculations, knowledge and experience
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a team environment.  Position requires providing support to a variety of projects and departments within the organization.
  • Ability to make good decisions and remain calm under pressure.

Work Conditions:

  • Able to work in a general office environment (~50%) as well as in and around operating process units (~50%)
  • Travel requirements: Up to 10% domestic and international travel
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and sit for long periods of time
  • Must be able to climb ladders up to 50 ft, balance, kneel, crawl
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs
  • Must be able to use personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Will be working a chemical plant site, may include exposure to hazardous materials.
