Position Summary 

We have an exciting opportunity for an Industrial Postdoc in Life Cycle Assessment. The individual selected for this position will lead the LCA development and modeling for LanzaTech’s gas fermentation technology to commercialize chemicals and fuels. Development of appropriate methodologies to capture all positive and negative externalities, and combining with established LCA methods, will allow LanzaTech to focus and position its technology to capture all of the environmental benefits that it offers. Initial responsibilities include reviewing of LanzaTech’s approach and benchmarking, developing new methodology(ies) for re-use of wastes and residues, writing and publishing both internal reports and journal articles, and collaborating with outside specialists. This position will collaborate on cross-functional teams with Engineering, Science, Business Development, and Government Relations.

Specific Roles

  • Lead the LCA development and modeling for LanzaTech’s gas fermentation technology to commercialize chemicals and fuels.
  • Review and benchmark LanzaTech’s processes across commercial and pre-commercial platforms for production of fuels and chemicals.
  • Development of LCA methodology for re-use of wastes and residues for industrial waste gases, and well as solid wastes, for both fuels and chemicals.
  • Establish LCA approach, and develop internal tools for routine LCA calculations.
  • Collaborate internally to establish experimental validation of modeling and process design at the lab or pilot scale.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of principles, theories, concepts, and industry practices and standards and their application; independently apply advanced LCA techniques.
  • Accountable for performing all aspects of LCA. Develops models and approaches that require innovation and ingenuity.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal and external collaborations.
  • Work with internal and external customers to use LCA to identify, evaluate and optimize process solutions related to process modeling, R&D, optimization, design, costing and implementation.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in STEM
  • 3+ years of experience in LCA application and method development
  • Team player that thrives in a cutting edge, fast paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Detail-oriented and experienced in communicating instructions to other team members
  • Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills
  • Advanced MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
