New Strain Development Director


To manage the development and commercialization of new bacterial strains for LanzaTech’s gas fermentation process to produce biofuels and chemicals, an essential function within the organization.  The Strain development function is an essential component of LanzaTech because it seeks to develop microbial catalysts that have enhanced performance or a novel product profile. Because LanzaTech creates fuels and chemicals from waste with our proprietary gas fermentation process, developing and improving our microbial catalyst portfolio is essential to ensure that we are able to maximize the value we create using our gas fermentation technology.   In overseeing the strain development function the successful candidate will lead efforts to test, isolate and optimize the growth characteristics of proprietary strains of anaerobic bacterium that produce chemicals and fuels  from carbon-containing gases (carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide/hydrogen mixtures), therefore converting waste products efficiently  into recycled valuable chemicals.   



  • Liaise and work with the synthetic biology team to obtain and further develop advanced fermentation strains.
  • Implement protocols and set expectations and procedures for the development and delivery of new microbial strains able to provide enhanced performance or product profiles using an array of commercial gas compositions. Set goals to align with LanzaTech’s commercial priorities and existing business development plans.
  • Lead new projects and products and manage relationships with process and business development teams to implement expectations and processes.
  • Manage the development of new methods and strategies to improve the performance of LanzaTech’ s proprietary fermentation process to enhance productivity .
  • Direct and manage research and development plans to address needs of commercial projects.
  • Manage the development of intellectual property regarding gas fermentation, including mechanical and operational technology and microbiological research.
  • Oversee the development of fermentation technologies using novel gas streams.
  • Manage laboratory work within the Fermentation Department and align Department’s objectives with LanzaTech’s overall objectives.
  • Identify bottlenecks and develop solutions to enhance efficiency.
  • Steer the direction of LanzaTech’s commercial and research priorities for the Fermentation Department.



  • A Master’s degree in Microbiology, Biology or Chemistry or equivalent experience; PhD preferred;
  • A minimum of 10 years Laboratory experience with the majority of that being in a managerial capacity and focused on working in microbial strain development;
  • Industry experience in biotech, wine/beer/food or pharmaceutical labs;
  • Attention to details and the ability to work consistently and accurately;
  • Demonstrated  ability to operate effectively in a laboratory environment through a basic knowledge of microbiology (including the ability to operate with good sterile technique) and biochemical laboratory principles;
  • Proficient in standard computer/software programs (i.e. MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Previous experience managing a team;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills;
  • Capable of time-management to complete tasks efficiently and within stated timelines;
  • Capable of working effectively in a team environment;
  • Experience working in accordance to good laboratory practices and adhere to safe standards and practices.
